Dee’s Delights ~ edition 11

Welcome to edition 11 of Dee’s Delights, a weekly post of inspiring, enriching and delightful things.  Here’s this weeks happenings that have brought a sparkle to my life!

Hands up who else loves sharing food and wine with great friends!  It seems that’s what the past week has been about…friendship, food and fun…what’s not to love?!

The week kicked off with lunch at a friends place…dips, prawns, salad and a good dose of laughter.  And I brought along some of my home made Ruby Lime Crush.  Y. U. M.

Roast dinner at my (almost) next door neighbours house.  What could be better after a long day at work than dinner with a great friend?  Beginning with champagne, followed by a superb roast lamb with all the trimmings, a glass or two of merlot and finishing with apple crumble.  D.E.L.I.S.H.

Next was  the Port Douglas Carnivale 5 Senses at the Sugar Wharf ~ a great girls night…if you’re reading this Heather thanks for letting me tag along!  Food, wine (well not for me as I was driving), music, art and a fantastic fashion parade.  Here’s little taste of the fun…

Unfortunately the Port Douglas Carnivale Parade had to be postponed due to an absolutely huge amount of rain!  There was lots of localised flooding and land slips.  I was flooded in at home and couldn’t get out to see my clients.  It’s rescheduled for this Friday so you’ll be hearing about it in next weeks edition.

Also this week from my kitchen ~ Tomato Soup with Avocado Salsa…I love soup – the perfect Autumn dinner and this was the first time I’ve made tomato soup from scratch.  It was delicious, even if I do say so myself!!!

And other gourmet delights included rosella jam ~ cream in coffee ~ scrambled duck eggs ~ olive bread ~ hummus dip ~ chai tea & cookies ~ pumpkin soup…. are you hungry yet?

Online delights…

and to keep with the food theme here is some mouth watering inspiration that I’ve come across on the web lately…

Crystal love I’ve really been enjoying the beauty and energy of our crystal collection lately.

Book love I’m forever craving more reading time and have a stack of books lined up.  This week I ordered Diane Ackermans “A History of the Senses”.  It looks soooo interesting, has anyone read it?

Shirt love I unpacked some shirts from my Sydney life.  They’ve been sitting unloved in space bags for years so I thought it was time to bring them out…crisp cottons, beautiful french cuffs, colours and stripes, some even need cuff links (how posh!!!).  Now for ironing them…I knew there was a reason I hadn’t worn them in a while!

Dee’s Delights ~ edition 9

Welcome to my weekly round up of all things inspiring, enriching and absolutely delightful!  Here’s some things that have been making my soul sing this week…

Pebble Australia is one of the most gorgeous shops in Port Douglas.  So many pretty things, something for everyone.  Pop in next time you’re passing!

A day out in Cairns ~ for most of us who live in Port Douglas or further north a day in Cairns starts with a long totally unachievable list of things to do and just the thought of it makes you exhausted!!!  But this week Andrew and I decided to have a more leisurely afternoon and although it did include a visit to the dentist for Andrew we didn’t rush or set ourselves an unrealistic number of tasks!  And…..drumroll…I splurged on two dresses, yep you heard right TWO!!!!  WOOHOO, I wasn’t even looking for anything but I saw a lovely Wayne Cooper dress in Myer, not the usual sort of thing I’d wear but decided to try it on for fun and while I was there I thought I may as well try on a gorgeous Cue dress that was calling my name.  I’m a big Cue fan ~ I LOVE trying on things that just fit perfectly and Cue always does that! …..Now I need to find somewhere to wear them, perfect excuse to go out I say!

My bottle collecting for the table setting I talked about in edition 8 has surged ahead thanks to my wonderful friend Lynda from Funstuff by Lynda…she swears she didn’t drink all the bottles herself?!!  I believe her!!!  I’m looking forward to buying some heliconias for my tropical table setting…stay tuned for a pic next week!

Learning and Leisure ~ I love that I can combine the two!  I’m booked in to do a Shirodhara Course at the end of June and I can’t wait.  I’m so excited as I’ve wanted to learn this amazing technique for so long and have finally found somewhere to do it.  It means a trip to Sydney so Andrew and I are going to have a mini break together prior to the course.  Yippee!!!!  Now for some winter wardrobe planning…as much as I am not a cold weather person I do love a winter coat and high heel boots!!!

Thai Red Curry

Dinner with old friends…Nothing beats catching up with old friends for a drink, dinner and a laugh.

I love sharing my home and cooking for people I love.

Note to self to make time to do it more often.

Aromatherapy for Stress

The definition of stress from the Oxford Medical Dictionary is any factor that threatens the health of the body or has an adverse effect on it’s functioning such as injury, disease or worry.  When most of us refer to stress we are talking about the emotional strain or tension that we suffer during demanding or high pressure situations.  At these times we may feel worried, anxious, fearful, agitated and unable to cope.

We all have a different stress threshold and some of us cope better with certain things than others.  Our response to stress depends on the state of our health, diet, previous experiences and the support network we have around us.

We all go through stressful situations at different times in our lives and as long as it is short term the body and mind returns to a balanced happy state.  However, if we suffer long term stress it can have a negative effect on our health.  Insomnia, emotional and physical exhaustion, hormonal imbalances and depression are just some of today’s stress related dis-eases.

There is some good news though!  Aromatherapy can help alleviate feelings of stress and bring about positive feelings to help you cope with demanding situations.

Essential oils can be used as an inhalation from the bottle whenever needed, in an oil burner, in the bath, in a base oil for massage or worn as a perfume oil.  Massage is particularly good as it deeply relaxes and improves your general well-being.

Choose essential oils that calm and soothe your body, mind and soul… you will no doubt have your favourites but here are my top ten essential oils for de-stressing.

Bergamot: it’s sedative yet uplifting qualities balance the emotions in times of stress.  It soothes the soul and strengthens the spirit.  It is gentle, positive and joyful.

Chamomile (Roman): is deeply calming especially for those who are emotional and sensitive, over-think things and worry a lot.  It also reduces insomnia brought on by stress.

Cypress: strengthens the nervous system, cleanses the spirit and restores inner calm.   Soothes and balances the emotions.  It is great for stress brought about by change.

Geranium: is balancing on the nervous system and the hormones, helping to reduce stress and restore harmony.  Enhances mood and helps bring about a sense of contentment and comfort.

Lavender: it’s sedating effect helps to ease stress. It is also balancing and one of the most calming and relaxing oils for the nervous system as a whole, assisting on both a physical and emotional level.

Lemon: is a happy oil ~  sunshine in a bottle!  It is uplifting and strengthening for the spirit.  Very refreshing and clearing for the mind.  It brings about laughter, joy and optimism.

Rosemary: is an excellent tonic for the nervous system.  It is strengthening and stimulating for the mind, helping to bring about a sense of clarity.  It assists in times of nervous fatigue and apathy, enhancing positive energy and confidence.

Sandalwood: is one of the best grounding, soothing and calming oils making it perfect for treating stress.  It helps reduce tension, overcome feelings of isolation and bring a sense of tranquillity, warmth, healing, hope and love.

Vanilla: is soothing and calming, bringing a sense of peace and positivity to ones soul. It’s relaxing properties ease restlessness and insomnia and help to elevate your mood.

Ylang Ylang: is sedating in times of severe tension bringing joy, serenity and comfort.  It enhances self-confidence, tenderness, care for oneself and encourages a passion for life.

You can use these essential oils alone or in a combination…you’ll probably find you like different ones at different times.  There is no right or wrong oil, if it makes you feel good then that’s the oil for you!

I urge you to see your GP or natural health practitioner for advice and treatment if you are suffering from long term stress and/or feel that you aren’t coping with any situation you are in.

Dee’s Delights ~ edition 8

Hello all, I mentioned last time that Dee’s Delights was now a weekly feature and here we are already a week later.  This weeks little collection of inspiring and enriching delights has given me great pleasure.  I hope it brings you some joy too…

This weeks delightful highlights…

More massage…a big yay for me and my neck and shoulders!  I know it might seem exccessive to some of you but your health and well-being  is so important – make it a priority and you’ll be amazed at how good you feel!  I’m booked in for another one this afternoon.

Absolutely gorgeous pink gingers from the Port Douglas markets…

and collecting bottles for a table setting inspired by this pic on i am not a celebrity. Keep any eye out for my tropical version…it might take me a while to collect the bottles!!!!

Happiness Habits ~ this new addition to my life was inspired by a comment my friend from Kitchen Kimakaze made about making her workplace bright and happy.  For my first new happiness habit, see above ~ buying myself some pretty flowers at least once a month.  An affordable treat that brings me joy to look at.

Lime Love ~ A couple of weeks ago I modified a recipe to create a refreshing drink I called Ruby Lime Crush and this week I came up with a Lime and Coconut Delight.  Both divine, even if I do say so myself.

And I’m loving the Zoya mani and pedi I gave myself this week too…

Petra is a smokey purple grey lacquer with a shiny cream finish.

A bit darker than it looks here. Perfect for autumn!
